We’re joining together as graduate workers to create a better workplace for all

Graduate workers at Penn State University are forming a union to improve our pay and working conditions. We join a growing labor movement of graduate workers at public universities like the University of California, the University of Michigan, and Rutgers University that have won improved wages, health benefits, protections from discrimination, and increased support for visa holders. We are Penn State, and our work as research and teaching assistants makes Penn State run! 

Without a union, Penn State administrators are the final decision-makers on all aspects of wages, benefits, and working conditions. We face:

• Wage stagnation and “raises” that do not keep pace with the rising cost of living
• Threats to our security and livelihood as international students 
• Housing and food insecurity
• Unannounced changes to our working conditions and lack of pay transparency

With a union, Penn State graduate workers can negotiate with the university administration as equals and have a real say in our working conditions. We can win: 

• Living wages and raises that keep up with inflation 
• Protections for visa holders, including funding security, legal support, and fee assistance 
• Subsidized transportation and parking 
• A voice in university policy decisions affecting graduate workers
